EVA uses a virtual safety wall that warns players when they get too close to the boundaries of the playable area. In addition, other players' silhouettes can be made visible through virtual walls, helping prevent potential collisions. Safety Is Also Built Into the Software

 

One of the most interesting aspects of safety in VR is that it does not rely exclusively on player behavior or supervision from the arena team. Some safety measures are integrated directly into the software.

 

When developing new features, the team analyzes situations that could potentially create risks and designs mechanisms to prevent them. If the game detects that a player is in a potentially dangerous situation, it can generate automatic messages to alert them and help them correct their position or behavior.

 

This means that safety acts as an additional layer within the experience. The virtual environment can respond to certain situations and help keep players within safe conditions.

 

The EVA Karting GP Case

 

The development of EVA Karting GP took this challenge even further. Unlike EVA Battle Arena, where players move around the arena on foot, Karting GP involves vehicles that can reach speeds of up to 15 km/h.

 

This introduced a new potential risk: collisions between karts or with the walls of the arena.

 

The team wanted to preserve an essential part of any karting experience: the ability to compete and make contact with other players. During testing, they discovered that collisions could actually be fun and become part of the experience, but only if they could be managed safely.

 

The solution combined hardware and software. The karts are equipped with bumpers to reduce impacts with other vehicles or arena walls, while players are securely attached to the karts with seat belts.

 

But the team went a step further.

 

They also developed a safety algorithm capable of analyzing variables such as the player's speed, the predicted angle of a potential collision, and the estimated intensity of the impact. If the system determines that a collision could be dangerous, it can slow down the kart to prevent or minimize the risk.

 

This system had to be carefully designed and tested across different situations to ensure it worked correctly throughout the experience.

 

Testing Safety in Real-World Conditions

 

This brings us to one of the most important principles in EVA's development process: a feature cannot be considered safe simply because it works correctly in theory.

 

New features are tested in a real arena with real players. The team observes how they behave, how they move, and what unexpected situations may arise.

 

This is particularly important in free-roaming experiences because human behavior is difficult to predict completely. A mechanic that appears safe in a controlled test can lead to different behavior once players are fully immersed in the experience.

 

That is why safety is evaluated alongside gameplay. A new feature needs to be fun and add value to the experience, but it must also operate safely within the physical environment where it will be used.

 

Safety and Immersion Are Not Opposites

 

One of the biggest challenges in VR development is protecting players without breaking their sense of immersion.

An experience that is too restrictive can lose some of the freedom that makes free-roaming virtual reality so compelling. At the same time, an experience that ignores the physical conditions of the environment can create unnecessary risks.

 

The solution is to integrate safety into the design itself.

 

Virtual warnings, other players' silhouettes, automatic messages, safety protocols, and the specific systems developed for experiences such as EVA Karting GP all work together to create an experience where safety and immersion are part of the same product.

 

A Responsibility That Starts in Development

 

Safety in a VR arena does not depend on a single element. It is the result of several layers that begin long before a player puts on the headset.

 

There is a preparation layer, with the safety briefing and player instructions. There is a physical layer, related to the arena and equipment. There is a technological layer, integrated into the games and safety systems. And there is one final, essential layer: continuous testing with real players.

 

For EVA, developing a new experience means considering all these dimensions from the very beginning. Because in a free-roaming experience, designing for the virtual world also means designing for the physical world.

 

And when both worlds coexist in the same arena, safety cannot be an afterthought. It has to be integrated into every design decision.
