# **Myths, Facts, and Real Solutions**

Virtual reality (VR) opens the door to immersive experiences that once existed only in our imagination. However, one of the most common concerns among new users is the infamous **motion sickness**, also known as **cybersickness or VR-induced motion sickness**. While not everything you hear about this topic is accurate, understanding what causes it, why it happens, and how to prevent it is key to enjoying VR without discomfort.

Here, we explain the science behind motion sickness, debunk some common myths, and explain why **EVA experiences are designed to significantly reduce this issue**.

## **What is motion sickness and why does it happen?**

**Motion sickness** is a group of symptoms that can range from nausea, dizziness, visual fatigue, and discomfort to vomiting when the brain perceives movement even though the body is not actually moving in the same way. This reaction occurs because **the brain receives conflicting signals from different sensory systems**:

- **Visual system:** indicates movement by showing a changing environment.
- **Vestibular system (inner ear):** detects balance and physical movement.
- **Proprioception:** provides information about the position and movement of the body through muscles and joints.

When these systems do not agree—for example, when your eyes see you moving in VR but your body is physically stationary—the brain interprets this discrepancy as a sensory conflict, which can trigger dizziness and other symptoms of motion sickness.

This theory, known as **sensory conflict theory**, is one of the most widely accepted explanations for why some people experience discomfort when using VR.

## **Common symptoms of motion sickness**

Motion sickness can manifest in different ways depending on the person and the intensity of the sensory discrepancy:

- Nausea or stomach discomfort
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Headaches
- Visual fatigue
- Cold sweating
- Disorientation
- Drowsiness or lethargy
- Loss of balance after the session

While many users experience only mild symptoms, in more severe cases, the discomfort can be enough to make someone stop a session or even avoid using VR again.

## **Common myths about motion sickness in VR**

### **❌ Myth 1: “Everyone gets motion sickness in VR”**

That's not true. Susceptibility varies greatly from person to person and depends on factors such as visual sensitivity, device settings, and the type of experience. Some users never experience it, while others are more sensitive.

### **❌ Myth 2: “It only happens in fast-paced or intense games”**

Although experiences involving a lot of movement can increase the likelihood of motion sickness, the underlying issue is the **sensory mismatch**. Even slower-paced experiences can cause symptoms if the visual and vestibular signals are significantly out of sync.

### **❌ Myth 3: “Motion sickness is inevitable in VR”**

With the right techniques and experience design, it is possible to **significantly reduce, and in some cases almost completely prevent, motion sickness in VR**. The key is to ensure that the signals reaching the brain are as consistent as possible.

## **Science-based solutions**

Research has identified several strategies that can help reduce the risk of motion sickness in VR:

### **✔️ Sensory synchronization**

The more consistent the relationship between **what you see and what your body feels**, the lower the likelihood of sensory conflict.

### **✔️ Real physical movement**

Walking, turning, or moving through physical space at the same time as you move in the virtual environment helps the brain better align its sensory signals.

### **✔️ Technology optimization**

Higher frame rates, low latency, and personalized settings can reduce the sensory overload that may contribute to discomfort.

### **✔️ Stable visual references**

Visual reference points that remain stable can act as anchors, helping users maintain a more consistent sense of orientation.

## **Why doesn't EVA cause motion sickness?**

In many conventional VR experiences, users **experience visual movement without physically moving in the same way**, which can amplify sensory conflict.

EVA is different: players **move physically throughout the arena**. The movement they perceive in the virtual environment is aligned with their physical movement, helping reduce the mismatch between what they see and what their body senses.

🔹 Visual information is aligned with signals from the vestibular system and proprioception.

🔹 There is no passive visual acceleration without corresponding physical movement.

🔹 The brain can interpret the experience more naturally because the player's physical and virtual movements are synchronized.

This **sensory coherence** addresses one of the main triggers of VR-induced motion sickness, allowing players to enjoy immersive VR sessions with greater comfort.

Motion sickness in VR is not an inevitable part of the experience. It has well-defined causes and can be mitigated through thoughtful technology and experience design. While many VR experiences can trigger symptoms because of mismatches between what you see and what you physically feel, platforms such as **EVA are designed around physical movement and sensory coherence**, helping create a more comfortable and natural VR experience.

Understanding why motion sickness happens and how it can be mitigated can help make VR a more accessible and enjoyable technology for everyone.
